YWCA Columbus Reacts to Elimination of USICH
The elimination of the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) is deeply troubling and reflects the Trump-Vance administration's disregard for vulnerable populations. Crucially, USICH has been effectively reducing homelessness since 2010, particularly among veterans.
YWCA Columbus is also alarmed by funding cuts and staffing reductions at other agencies, including HUD, USDA, VA, and HHS, which will significantly worsen the housing crisis and harm working families. These cuts undermine essential safety net services and strain our ability to serve vulnerable residents. The implications are dire: increased homelessness, strain on local governments and nonprofits, and reduced funding for critical programs like Section 8 housing.
Overall, these cuts will burden local shelters, including the YWCA Family Center, and the consequences will be far-reaching. We must continue to move boldly forward together to ensure the safety and dignity of our community's most vulnerable members.
