Team Announcements + Updates

  • The playground is open! You can see photos from our soft opening with residents here. We look forward to celebrating with our donors and the community on July 11!

The Ohio State Building & Construction Trades Council worked with the YWCA Family Center and other partners to launch a new initiative aimed at bringing more women into the Building Trades. We have a cohort of really engaged residents who are learning about the earning potential of working in the trade industry.

  • The YWCA Kids Place team was able to increase capacity in Westerville by licensing another classroom, which means we pulled all the kids off the waitlist! This means YWCA Columbus is serving well over 300 children this summer across four camps.

Overall, camp is going well! Our partnerships with the Young Chefs® Academy, Kasper Harris Filming, and Jump Bunch have been wonderful, and our staff-led gardening projects, programming focused on social-emotional learning and communication (through Somocom Lab) and physical fitness (through Skillastics) are making for a fun summer.

  • The Women’s Residency team is partnering with Integrated Services for Behavioral Health to offer onsite counseling services four days a week. Upcoming group offerings include trauma informed care, grief and art therapy, and more!

Women’s Residency is also partnering with Columbus State Community College to offer a 4-week Digital Skills Boot Camp pilot for six residents. Participants will learn how to use the internet to access resources, use Google applications, protect their devices from security threats, and understand popular social media apps.

Shoutout to Dan for providing an eviction education services workshop to the residents and assisting with new programs such as Columbus State Community College Digital Skills Boot camp.

  • The education team is in the process of licensing at least two more programs for the upcoming school year. Stay tuned for more details!

Enrollment is open now for existing programs at ywcacolumbus.org/ykp

  • Our former director of advocacy, Tanya Salyers has left YWCA to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff at Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA). We are grateful for her leadership as YWCA Columbus navigated new advocacy efforts that strengthen families and protect marginalized communities. We look forward to partnering with her to advance equity in transit, and her continued support of our mission as an alum.

  • We are looking for a payroll coordinator, part-time program assistants for YWCA Kids Place, an advocacy director, graphic design specialist, and more!

As a reminder, employees who refer candidates for vacant roles are eligible for a $500 bonus (if the candidate is hired and upon completion of their probationary period). For additional information about these positions, please refer to ywcacolumbus.org/jobs or Indeed.

Save the Date

  • The new and improved playground at the YWCA Family Center is finished! We will officially be rededicating the space – with help from the community – on Thursday, July 11.

  • Bright Futures is a community-based program that empowers girls to understand and disrupt systemic oppression, develop agency, and take up the roles of leadership needed to advocate for changing the systems that perpetuate inequity. Contact Navya Nalla or visit ywcacolumbus.org/brightfutures to learn more!

  • YWCA will welcome our newest Women of Achievement and Women on the Rise, as well as the most recent Leadership for Social Change cohort, to the YWCA alumni family! Join us at The Fives at 5:30 p.m. (registration opens at 5) to reconnect with Academy members, leadership program graduates, board members, and YWCA staff.

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed on this day in 1990, thanks in part to the efforts of Judy Heumann, a disability civil rights activist who helped launch America’s disability civil rights revolution. In addition to her contributions to the ADA, she continued spreading awareness about disability justice until her passing in March last year. Heumann’s activism continues to inspire youth activists to this day, “who don’t see the ADA as a capstone of rights, but as just a floor for achieving equality.”

  • The African American Wellness Day is a transformative day dedicated to the health, well-being, and empowerment of Black men and their families. YWCA Columbus is sponsoring a Passion Team for the 5K Walk & Run on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 a.m. RSVP here!

  • Good Neighbors of Central Ohio is hosting the 26th Good Neighbors Picnic on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Wolfe Park on E. Broad Street. More information will be available soon, but anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to learn more and sign up here

  • Save the date for this year’s Activists and Agitators event! More information to come.

Phyl Flanagan & Danielle Boyd, YWCA’s Justice, Equity & Belonging program managers, presented at OSU’s National Conference on Diversity, Race & Learning on the topic of Restorative Practices in May.

Alexa has been working so diligently on the Women’s Residency EARN store to make it an inviting and welcoming space for the women in the program.

I wanted to include a shout out to the Women’s Residency Team for their hard work and participation in the 4-week professional development training series, as well as DLO and Crystal for their efforts in the development of the professional development training sessions!

Thank you, Lee and Michelle, for supporting efforts to get the elevator fixed in the Griswold building! And, thank you, Alexa Molitor and Bianca Barton, for assisting residents in and out of the building.

Anna Moore and Molly Kowaleski supported a resident who agreed to share her story with 10TV. Anna and Molly worked thoughtfully through the process to make the interview smooth and enjoyable for the resident to share her life journey with others.

Teresa Woods is leading the service coordinator team through successful program file reviews and creating a service coordinator handbook for future team members.

Mikhala Wilson has been assisting a resident with an interview for YWCA’s upcoming summer fundraising campaign and assisting a resident with getting off-site medical care and onsite therapeutic services. Great work, Khala!

We want to give a shout out to Erin Scott, HR generalist, for a successful and smooth open enrollment period! One of our benefit partners Erin worked with during open enrollment shared, “I must say... Erin was on top of her game. She was one of the most hands-on HR persons I have worked with.”

Amber Jacott is leading the Women’s Residency program through the CARF accreditation process as we prepare for the upcoming survey process. This is a ton of work & we’re so grateful for her leadership and attention to detail!

With help from Michelle Chieffo, the Women’s Residency program has reached 100% capacity! Michelle always goes the extra mile to support residents when there are issues with maintaining their housing.

Big thanks to Vuanita Hill for her exceptional efforts in planning YFC’s Juneteenth program. Her hard work ensured a meaningful and memorable celebration for all including food, music, dance and learning moments. Vuanita’s commitment truly embodied the celebratory spirit of Juneteenth! Thanks also to Carrie, Tina, Clyde, and the rest of the team for the program, decorations, and food.

Community Shelter Board (CSB) awarded its Michelle Heritage Innovation Award to YWCA in June for the Family Center’s successful pilot of the Direct Cash Transfer program. The program had a 95% success rate in getting folks to their next step in housing. Shoutout to the advocate team for their work!

Thank you to the staff who helped plan and attended our Racial Justice Challenge Round Table discussion on May 9. One attendee shared, “This was an amazing event. Our conversations could have lasted all day!”

Congratulations to Leadership & Social Justice program coordinator, Navya Nalla, for her acceptance into the United Way of Central Ohio’s prestigious Project Diversity Pride Leadership program!
