YWCA Columbus To Bring Building Trades Apprenticeships to Women

June 17, 2024 (COLUMBUS, OH) – Along with the Ohio State Building & Construction Trades Council and other partners, YWCA Columbus launched a new initiative today aimed at bringing more women into the Building Trades.

“We are looking forward to kicking off this program together with the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council,” said Elizabeth Brown, president and CEO of YWCA Columbus. “These apprenticeship opportunities will lead to long-term prosperity and economic stability for the women we serve and their families.”

Demand for building and construction tradespeople is higher than ever in Ohio. Ohio’s Building Trades unions are leading tremendous outreach and recruitment efforts across the state to train the next generation of tradespeople in 12 distinct construction trades:

  • Carpenter

  • Electrician

  • Data Technician – Limited Energy, Restricted Energy

  • Elevator Constructor

  • HVAC

  • Ironworker

  • Mason

  • Operating Engineer

  • Painter

  • Plumber

  • Sheet Metal Worker

  • Sprinkler Fitter

Affiliated Construction Trades (ACT) Ohio advocates for quality, safe construction by contractors and skilled craftsmen with integrity. Through intentional recruitment - including Apprenticeship Readiness Programs serving women, people of color, justice-involved workers and veterans - Ohio’s construction unions are growing the most diverse workforce in the construction industry today. Its Ohio Tradeswomen initiative specifically will cultivate a strong network of union tradeswomen who work together to recruit, retain, and support each other.
